Os moradores reclamam da falta de trevos seguros, barreiras centrais e áreas de escape. A estrada é considerada sucateada e abandonada pela concessionária Via 040.
As demandas incluem instalação de áreas de escape, barreiras centrais, duplicação do trecho entre Nova Lima e Conselheiro Lafaiete, regulação do transporte de minério e maior presença da PRF.
A BR-040 registrou a maior quantidade de mortes nas rodovias mineiras no primeiro semestre de 2023, com 91 vítimas, segundo a PRF.
